The aurora r1 isn't that old lol.

Looks like it would take regular DDR3 ram.

The only problem I could see happening is that he's not using the same ram. For some reason, Dell made early Alienware computers require for ALL ram sticks to be EXACTLY the same, or you wouldn't be able to boot.

So, get Six 4GB sticks of DDR3 ram that are the same speed(and same models if you can to guarantee them working 100%) Make sure they're not server ram(ECC ram).

The Aurora R1 usually has problems with high speed ram. I suggest getting all sticks to be 1333 or 1600, nothing higher.

You should do just fine running 12gb of ram though, so just get 3 4gb sticks and install them in slots 1,3,5. You could get higher clocked ram, but you'd have to change things in the bios to get them running at their full speed. I have a few links for where people discussed their ram setups with multipliers and such if needed.

Its weird though Brave, because from memory the RAM in clouds PC at the moment is ECC.
Also it may not be the Aurora that Cloud has.

The Area 51 ALX R1 then? Been a while since I've had my hands on one myself, I used to drool over the old Alienware desktop cases years ago.

Looks like if that's what he has, he'd have to go with 3x 4gb 1600mhz. MAYBE 1866mhz, but alot of people were unsuccessful with that setup. The chipset works perfectly with triple channel ram, but dual, not so much. Some wouldn't post, some would. Luck of the draw with that usually. He could try 8gb sticks, but there's a high chance the board wouldn't accept t since it was rated at 6gb @ 1866..

I say to just upgrade finally. Change out mobo and cpu to something a bit newer, only for a couple hundred. It's the best way to go if he's trying to keep up and would like more longevity guaranteed.

Area-51

* Matched memory modules installed in DIMM connectors 1/2/3
* To run in Tri-Channel mode (3 lanes), memory must be installed in multiples of 3
* Maximum memory 12GB
* A09 = For PC3-12800 and PC3-15000 XMP memory, go into the Bios and turn on XMP. Go into the Overvoltage Config and set QPI and Uncore voltage to +200mv. Leave everything else on Auto
* A10 = For PC3-12800 and PC3-15000 XMP memory, go into the Bios and turn off XMP. Then set the memory multiplier to 14, set Uncore to +200

Looks like you can only have up to 12gb @ 1600. So, 3x 4GB 1600Mhz sticks.

Again, make sure it's not server ram. It could cause you to not boot. Some have gotten it to work(idk how though) but still, not that many have, so best to stick to non-ecc ram(regular desktop ram)

RE: I don't do IT

I have used this ram on multiple builds with no issues.G skill makes high quality products I would either go with them,Corsair or Mushkin.Stay with 12 GB of 1600,or 1333 MHz ram and you should be ok.

RE: I don't do IT

Cloud in all honesty, it's not worth your time an effort to find specialized RAM for an outdated build. Invest some money in a new one (I am already doing one myself, my first one (yippee)), or if you really want to stick to Alienware consider the X51. For a decent price it is pretty damn sexy, and up there in terms of specifications.
