listen idk about a silent voice but this happened before after the oscar nominations of 2016 a whole rally was done online in 2016 when kimi no nawa was not elected for oscar however it was one of the only movies that was titled oscar worthy by critics even before it got popular.
after a bit of research by people, after the wave. it was concluded that oscar only awards what they have produced or have a hand in its production. i mean not silent voice not kimi no nawa neither was selected but red turtle from japan which is from studio ghibli(which also had something to about funding with disney) was selected. and a slag taunt got popular in memes with a kimi no nawa wallpaper saying "if its not disney or ghilli its not oscar worthy.
it concluded that oscar only praise what they produce
