The first one is just clean, simple, and matches our color scheme compared to the old one. The second is a gif that looks awesome but it will slow down page load times. What do you guys think?

You could just have the second one without the gif action. Just make it the last segment, that would look good without slowing down the page.

I would go with the first one. Its simple and clean. Don't want anything too fancy for a default profile pic.

I don't see a problem with the GIF. Don't think it would slow down by much (if it does). GIF looks much cooler, but as Nukem mentioned, we could also go with the static image.
