I wouldn't call it dead just yet. Now that they added friends/traiding a bunch of people have come back to the game.
Speaking of, here is my friend code if anyone wants to add me. Traiding won't work because you have to be close but I can still send gifts.

Seems pretty active around here I have 4 gyms within 30 minutes that all get swapped by teams daily
