Computer Building

Hey guys.  I assume the majority of you all built your own rig.   I was wondering if you guys get together and discuss part sales, upgrade paths, speculate on GPU pricing, and maybe complain about ram price fixing.  Anyway, if is not happening already, maybe this thread can start something.

I am running an i3 8100 with an MSI GTX 970 and 16 gigs of 2666 ddr4.  I am using a 2tb HDD, and want to upgrade to an SSD.

Been waffling on weather to upgrade the storage or ram first, as it is working fine with the hard drive as is.

TL;DR Do you guys even build bruh?

RE: Computer Building

Your ram is waaay more than enough. No need to upgrade that. With some fairly good data management you don't need more than 2tb although I would say an SSD would be great. What I would upgrade is the i3 as it may limit the potential of the gtx 970 card.

And yes, I do build.

Also ram mghz won't effect performance much until you get below what you have.

RE: Computer Building

Yeah, the 2tb is fine for all my steam games, I will get another 2tb soon, but I was thinking about getting a 500gig nVME m2.

The only argument to get ram first is I can play anything I want already, and to do certain video rendering and stuff I think 16 gig is not a lot, not sure. To do 2d animation and render it do you think the 16 gigs is enough?

Funny thing is that while this motherboard can take say an i7 8700k, that would be 350$, and for what im doing with it now the i3 8100 is plenty good. I will certainly be upgrading that sooner or later though. Eventually I am getting another graphix card, but this 970 kicks ass.

nVME and SATA SSDs have similar performance. If you can get a SATA for cheaper than an nVME I say go for it. And yeah, for rendering more ram will make it so you can get it rendered quicker.

RE: Computer Building

Personally, 16gb or ram is fine for all triple A games nowadays, I'd pick up a new hard drive if you're running out. But personally I'd upgrade that cpu to an i7-8700k with an aio cooler assuming it fits in your case.
