In high school my family moved and I had not friends. I found a group of kids that looked cool enough (meaning stylewise culturally simpatico with myself) and walked up to them and said "hey, im new here and have no friends. Can I hang out with you guys?"

One of them said "oh fuck." sadly.
another one smiled and said sure.
Been friends with one of that group for (well) over 10 years.
