I think before seeking answer to this particular question, it is important to establish the ‘right’ thing.
Let me give you an example that I heard in an online lecture.
Suppose you are a doctor and you have five patients who are going to die because of different organ failures. If provided organs at right time, you can save their lives.
Now you are sitting in your cabin and a person comes visiting you for cold. Apparently, he has all his organs working. It strikes you at that particular moment what if I kill this guy and take out his organs to save five other lives.
One for five. If you want to increase the difficulty, imagine those five to be important personalities and the healthy patient to be a common man.
What is the ‘right’ here?
Either you can do right by just treating his cold and send him back or you can kill him to save five over one and make things right.

If something is possible do the right thing.
If it can't be done no matter the effort, do the right thing and stop.
