What exactly are you going to college for, and how many years.

4 years depending. If community collage first then 2 years that and another 4 years of the collage where you get your degrees.

Also to answer your first question. Get a good education and get a job that can support himself and a family if he get's one. Also some just take it to increase their knowledge. They might have a job already but want to take some courses. Which is a good idea if you lost a job you have more fields/careers to choose from.
