Of course Russia can't handle a large scale war, their economy hasn't improved or evolved since the 70's, and their shit healthcare and alchol abuse has their citizens with a average lifespan of just 60 years.
They can't afford it, but they will try to anyway because in Putin's eyes, ties with Ukraine are more important. Ukraine borders russia, and if ukraine joins the EU than he will have european influence right at his doorstep, and if tensions ever rise between the ukraine and russia, he knows that all of Europe (and most likely the US, Canada, and Australia through NATO and the UN) will be right there to kick his shit in. Essentially, he wants to fight a war to stop a potential and bigger one.
That is why the best course of action would be for NATO and the EU to stop russia right now rather than put it off until layer.
