you have similar mmr as them as the most likely case, you have above average normal mmr and they have below average normal mmr
Keep in mind that both your normal AND ranked mmr are taken into consideration during matchmaking; NOT just ranked as you may think

Yeah noticed that. When I was unranked I was playing with Bronzies and like no silvers. When I got silver, suddenly, I got more silvers in normals.
