If your biggest concern is losing weight, the most important thing to remember is that eating more means you'll put on more mass. If you find yourself hungry frequently and trying to snack, try and just drink some water instead to starve off your urge to eat until your next meal.

In addition to a better diet, add in some cardio. It's hard to get into at first, and it could be as easy as a long walk or hiking in a trail to start, but there are so many benefits. Personally, I started off running 5 years ago and I turned from a fat kid into a national championship competitor. Now that I'm in "retirement," I continue to run a few times a week and do some lifting to maintain the same shape I was in when I was racing.

As far as motivation goes, I don't want to become what I used to be, and my personal drive is knowing that there's always something to work on.
