It was conceived in the 16th century and took precedence after feudalism phased out of popularity, foremost in Britain as Mercantilism provided better benefits to the merchants in the transportation of resources from many of the empires global colonies. This obviously threw millions of serfs off the lord's lands they had lived on for generations and gave rise to a huge labor force without sufficient pay or work conditions for the factories. This all led to the subsequent creation of the first major corporations through joint-stock companies, such as The East India Company.

Don't talk about market based economies as if they are the only alternative when you don't even know the history behind them.
