Gaming laptop, heating an issue?

So I received my Asus GL551JW wh71 wx laptop 5 days ago. I ran Sleeping Dogs, Crysis 2 (only have these games atm) at Ultra and it seems that the laptop gets pretty warm close to the trackpad. However there's no difference (lag/ frame rate drop) in game play.

I didn't take a risk and switched it off once it became too hot. So this happens after like 15-20 mins of gaming. At other times it is pretty cool plus I tried with some moderate demanding games and it was pretty cool.

I did some research but I'm not satisfied yet. So asking you guyz whether it's okay for me to continue gaming when it's hot.

Added Info: I play with the AC adapter plugged in.
The heat does not rise after it has reached a certain temperature.
Haven't used any applications to check the temperatures. Anyone know of a good app?

And is it safe for me to play games when it's hot? And since this is a 800$ laptop I can't expect a good cooling system, therefore is it common among other mid range gaming laptops?
