Any tips, advice, or experiences with using dating sites for locals?

I asked in Discord and got mixed answers, so I figured I'd ask here too. For the guys - what kind of experience have you had with online dating? Good? Bad? Any tips you want to share? As for women - what's the creepiest message, and your best experience?

Just to clarify, I mean finding people local to you online. Like through POF or tinder.
