Right before WW1 ended, Russia, Austria hungary and germany were on the brink of collapse. During these times, russia had a civil war between the russian empire and soviet russia (later named the soviet union).

Once the communists (the Bolsheviks) they established multiple new laws and planned that turned the new russia into a dark and cold (pun intended) to live. Anyone who spoke out or tried to fight the new government, was either killed or sent to the brutal work camps like The Gulag. This kind of country is similar to that one country that tried to fight russia in world war 2....

Regardless, this civil war was a brutal one with 7 million to 12 million deaths.
