I personally usually take the A4 just because of the larger bullet pool. At my crummy rank fights tend to go on for a decent time, so if it's a fight for B and then I need to run and retake A, the A4 lets me not have to worry about finding another gun somewhere along the way.
Basically it comes down to spraying through smoke and maybe surprising some people vs being able to fight longer and spraydowns. Just pick one and try it out for a little, then stick with the one that feels better in terms of spray and shooty times and whatever.
The first few shots with the M4A4 is pretty accurate and the spray is pretty condensed and has more bullets than the A1s. But the A1s is more accurate over all, but if you where to spray with it, you would run out of bullets and get punished for it. The way i see it, why use just an accurate weapon when you can use an accurate weapon with more ammo in it? Then again, it's all preference.
personally I prefer the A4 because it has a larger magazine (at least from my memory, its been a long while since I've played, the A4 had 30 rounds while the S had 20) and I don't have the best accuracy so that little bit of extra ammo per clip is a nice little help
