yeah in high school it's called reinforcement or acceleration courses
basically you can take a course to improve your mark or take it so you wont need to take it next term

In canada you need to have 40 credits which compose of compulsory (math/english etc) and elective (accounting, art design, gym etc). If you take summer/night/extracurricular you can graduate a full year earlier. But everyone usually uses their four years as everyone goes to post secondary...
