The CCCP was not a communism in any Marxian sense of the word. In fact, to Marx, "Communist State" was an oxymoron. True Communism is the collective of resources and means of production to the community in a Classless, Currency-less, and Stateless society. What the USSR did was far from Communism- it was an attempt at Socialism, the transitionary eco-political ideology where the means of production and resources are controlled by the working class collectively- although to even call it that does the word Socialism a great disservice.

Marx never intended for Communism to be implemented at any point in the near future. He understood, like most who understand the real meaning of communism, that two things are required for it to work- a change in the psychology of man from the profit motive to a drive for self and communal satisfaction, that was the first. The second was the overproduction of resources enabling a "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" economic policy. Neither of these two are obtainable at the current point in time, which is exactly what socialism is for.
