But it's not even good advice. You don't have to be an uber leet haxor to use linux, you just have to learn some of the terminal commands and know how to use google.
The problems with linux are compatibility. Linux by it's namesake uses a different kernel and desktop environment than Windows. It is easier and more cost effective for developers to simply develop for windows instead, especially when they know windows programs can for the most part be "emulated" (emulation isn't really the right word) with WINE. The problem is that programs developed can rely on libraries and software like .net framework, visual C++ and more which don't natively exist within winelib- so WINE's solution was winetricks, which exists to set them up within the compatibility layer; however, because this is all black box tested, it's prone to error; and companies, especially those with direct connection to linux distro competitors like windows, aren't inclined to help resolve the issue.
This could be solved if linux had a decent amount of 3rd party development that could actually compete with their windows counterparts, but again it's more cost effective to ignore linux for the most part. And that's the big debate- if WINE didn't exist, people would have to develop directly for linux- but without those programs already there, people aren't inclined to even install linux in the first place.
