Literally a meme, just like dx12 was. Hell, this whole VR shit is a meme too. Nobody is going to be playing VR for several more years, this is a marketing gimmick to get you to needlessly upgrade from last gen.

There aren't even any actual benchmarks, and the aftermarkets for the 1080 just came out recently (cheaper than the FE), yet people are already gushing over the 480.

It's all about the wording of your rpesentations. Like how everyone loves apple so much, but you can beat pretty much every defense they have for apple products being better, then they end up saying "Well I like it, so whatever" or something along those lines.
