- So people, if a fish is underwater is it wet? personally i think Yes reasons is because the opposite of wet is dry as i know it but if a fish underwater is wet then a human on land is dry i thought this was simple until one of my friends brought it up at school today i have thought about it long and hard and it is wet inside the water although my friends say it is wet when its outside of the water as the description reads wet is "covered or saturated with water or another liquid" so it means it's not XD
I am starting to get really confused in my head please help me out with this discussion simply if a fish is underwater is it wet? I've said my piece what do you guys think?

Edit: ok, well it depends then. How do you define wetness? In air, it would be soaked/covered in any liquid because air isn't a liquid. Since water is already liquid, then they'd have to be coated in some other liquid. Problem is, it's not likely they'll get covered in oil, plus they already have a slimy layer on their scales to reduce water resistance. So with this relative definition, they would not be wet in water.

No, fishes are constantly surrounded by water so they can't be considered wet until they are removed from the water.

I hate this debate so much. People literally went off of this question based off of one single google search from a one resource which I'm not even sure is reliable. But, yes, the fish is wet. The literal definition of wet is consisting of, containing, covered with, or soaked with liquid (such as water) and that is straight from Merriam Webster, ladies and gentlemen. The definition of underwater is lying, growing, worn, performed, or operating below the surface of the water. So, if the fish is touching the water, it is wet. As long as it is soaked with liquid, it is wet. You may appear dry once fully submerged underwater but you are, in fact, wet.

Would everything be wet all the time then, every living thing needs water to survive, therefore being wet at any given moment its alive and only inanimate things can ever be dry? It's all how someone perceives the definitions of said words in a given context.
