It is the same concept with cheese. If you punch a hole through cheese than it still only have 1 hole. Just a long one.

So my answer is 1. Just a long one. Now if you punch another hole
through the straw in the opposite direction to the original hole how
many holes do you have?

What if you have Two holes that only go halfway through the object but then you join them. Is it one hole or two?

I believe it depends on the was the original hole was creatcd. If it was in one 'hole punch' than one but if it was
made with two hole punch's then logically would it be 2 holes that have been joined?

So. I looked up the definition. "a hollow place in a solid body or surface." So by that definition the hollow space of the straw is the hole and since it connects without making the object not a solid body than it is one hole. So if you punch six long circular strips into a cheese that all connect it is still one hole because it is only one Hollow space. For example if you punched a 'hole' halfway through a straw then it's straw hole would be the original straw's hollow + that hollow 'hole' you created in the straw. It would have three openings but it would only be one hole. If you have two unconnected spaces in a solid then that is technically two holes.
