Why don't games have much content these days and why are publishers so greedy ?

Why don't games have much content these days and why are publishers so greedy ?

Back in the days when Unreal tournament was released it had shit load of maps , modes, weapons , unlockables  , vehicles  and the SDKs/modding tools and the sweetness of server based online/LAN multiplayer made it epic

+ Growing online communities(gamespy etc) and community expansions as well as expansions by official devs too 

Something getting mainstream does have its downsides after all

: ( Miss those expansion days and no small DLCs and microtransactions

The answer is simple, they're allowed to.
Back in the day, a company couldn't just release a patch for a game and call it a day. Because of that, they had to playtest it over and over and over to make sure it was glitchless. And since we have online marketplaces now, companies don't have to make sure the game is fun either. It used to be different for DLC too, they used to have to put all they had into a game so that people would buy it and have all the content. Now, companies have the option to upload "DLC" which should've been in the main game in the first place.

Yes, but it's not all negative. I listed the fact that developers can send out patches as a con earlier, but it's just as much as a pro. It used to be if there was a gamebreaking glitch then tuff luck, find a way around it. Now customers can send emails to a company saying "Hey man, X is broken" and the company can roll out a patch and fix it. The problem is that this takes too much priority and allows the developers to get sloppy with their game(s).

Keep in mind not all developers are like that, Vicarious Visions did an amazing job remaking the first 3 crash games, and there hasn't been a single patch since release. It's just every now and then you see a company put out an unfinished game and patch it up as time goes on (Ubisoft comes to mind)

  A new issue gets in the way 
   Paid Early access games with microtransactions that get abandoned by devs
  Little to no unlockables in games and everything has to be a dlc
