well it's only Pentium 4 and really old so i don't really care. but it does play all my win 98 games. i think it could be to do with the fact that it is just old or possibly the power supply
it has a floppy disk drive 2 cd drives 2 hdd's the graphics card is an ati 9600, 2.8ghz pentium 4 processor with an 18" monitor and i don't think all that would be too much for the 400w power supply so i don't know why its having a hissy fit
but back in the day it was a beast

when i turn it on there is the sweet hum of computing power
then the loading windows screen then it just decides to turn off
if anyone has any ideas as to why it would do that it would be much appreciated

Hard drive is turning off I would say, try and boot into safe mode, or boot into a live OS. (Linux) and recover your data you needs.

the monitor works fine.the hdd could be screwed but it won't boot into safe mode i already tried that it won't allow me to do anything because it just shuts down.
it starts up and seems like its going fine then it just shuts down like the power has been sucked from it
sometimes it gets further sometimes it doesn't get past the bios screen.
all the leads seem to be fine
i cleaned all the fans and stuff out because it was really dusty i might have bumped one of the power supply cables or something i'd say its something to do with the power supply

Check all your connections are securely bedded. If you have another computer try switching out the power supply with minimum equipment connected (leave all the drives unconnected except the hard drive).
If it still fails, then it is most likely HDD or motherboard. If it works, then connect each drive in turn until it fails. If it doesn't fail then it is your power supply not handling the load.
Replaced the case with power supply (it usually works out to be about the same price as replacing just the power supply).
These power supplies often go funny under loads, but they are relatively cheap to replace.

lol...pain in the butt answer..

1. have you cleaned the computer of all dust...if one of the chips is getting too hot it will shutdown..

2. do you have Hirens boot cd?

3. unplug the drive your operating system is on and reboot...

4. should come up ..."no operating system" ... (wait a few min.. to see if computer turns off)

5. If it stays on... then the hard drive you unplugged has a problem...

6. could be mechanical... or you got a virus on it...

7. lol here... you may have to bite the bullet here and dump the second drive and install a new system
on it..

8. once you get the second to boot and run as primary (c:/ drive)... you can plug first drive
back in and recover your files....

9. once you get your files off of it... "format it" ...

check the compacitors on your board if they have risen at all and look swelled or even broken on top then its time for a new motherboard i suggest an asus motherboard judging by what setup you have there

Then if your going to do that... take the time and work on the computer and educate your self

If you fail... buy anther one

They are not that hard to work on...

do some youtube viewing and internet reading

then open the computer up and rock...lol
