Guide people to become SmG members if they are interested, not when they literally just joined since that'll overwhelm most people. Let them get familiar with the site first since its a forum website, not everyone understands it (including me when I was new). Then give them your link.

The way I get it is let them know multiple times it's their choice, but at the same time pressure them to join and repetitively mentioning on how cool the forums are.

There isn't really any major tips besides being calm and being able to accept that not everyone will like your pitch
