In terms of competing for an achievement yes. In terms of physical ability, no. Athletes are on a different level when it comes to the physical fitness aspect. However I see the relation in a similar mindset.
When it comes to athletes and gamers, I can see the connection drawn between the two. Since I was a fan of overwatch league for a good while, I attended a game for my birthday and being there felt a lot like if I were attending a game for a sport. I think it's fun to act like they are similar with team spirit and all, jerseys etc. but I also think that the two can't really be compared as they're different things.
I respect the competitive spirit e-sports professional possess. But I don't compare them to athletes. The kind of hard work athletes has to put in is different from what the latter has to put in. Training to be a professional athlete is 100 times harder than training to be an e-sports professional; nonetheless it doesn't mean the latter doesn't require hard work. They're just not comparable.
