It seems like most action horror movies and shows turn in to gorefest where the fear aspect becomes less and less focused. For example resident evil. The terrible adaptation of the source material aside. There are a few exceptions however.

There are some shitty adaptations out there, since they are usually done by people who do not understand the source material. As for horror in general, I would say we are actually in a horror renaissance. There is some amazing things out there. If you do not like gore, there are things like

-Midsommar
-The Ritual
-Hereditaary
-The Void
These are slowburn and cosmic horror movies. These are amazing but are not for everyone. Note Im not saying these movies will not have gore, its gore is not the focus.

If youre looking for slasher-esq, there are
-Youre Next
-Ready or Not
-The Strangers

I've felt the same thing tbh. I want horror movies to race my heart and to be filled with jumpscares but apparently, they all suck at that aspect. One movie that I really did like was "Drag Me To Hell". It's a good movie if we're gonna talk about the horror aspect.

Jumpscares are terrible imo as they are not so much scary as they are annoying. They can be used effectively but usually are shit.

This tbh. This is where director brilliance comes in. One of the reasons why I love Sam Raimi. Speaking of Mr. Raimi, he kinda ruined Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness. Out of context but I felt like protesting.

Also I've noticed that guys are shown as less afraid while women are always portrayed as damsel in distresses. Super cringe stereotype tbh

From what I have noticed yeah.

I rarely get spooked by any action horror movies.
