The confusion is between continents and tectonic plates. Continent are land masses that generally sit on these tectonic plates. In total there is seven continents. North America is on a different tectonic plate than South America so they are not the same continent. Antarctica is a land mass even though it is not populated by humans so it is a continent. Australia is a large island but also the smallest continent.
Asia is the largest continent. Europe and Africa are the other continents.
