Help! Intel vs AMD

So with my recent plans to acquire a EVGA 680. I have noticed that the card can run PCIe 2.0, however recommends 3.0 to actually get the performance that you pay for. Do not want to bottleneck the card.

Obviously that limits me to a motherboard that carries PCIe 3.0 slots. Preferably SLI compatibility for future expansion.

So next is AMD vs Intel. AMD has apparently come a long way with reliability, however struggles with a lot of power consumption. On the lighter side is a hell of a lot cheaper than Intel. Either way overclocking is going to be a reality.

I really just do not want to get in over my head here. Building a PC itself is treading new water to me. I know many SMG members are boss with Computer hardware, and I would love for them to shed some light on the subject and hit me with some recommendations.

Re: Help! Intel vs AMD

I would stick with Intel until amd releases their new processor design. they are still using an outdated socket...maybe they upgraded recently. I run a 2500k intel which is more than enough for games. just my preference based on comparing the two companies results of their processors.

AMD tends to overheat more often, apparently. I run an i7-2600k, but you should get a better cpu cooler if you're overclocking. You should get one of the latest i7's with k in the name, so you can easily overclock. It probably will not bottleneck your card.

AMD rarely overheat now with the new APU series...

They're both pretty good. Choose whichever one you like IMO, that's what I did

Re: Help! Intel vs AMD

Seems like every AMD motherboard that I come across only runs PCIe 2.0. Whats with the lack of support for 3.0? Looks like Intel is going to be the better buy. Thanx for the input people. Also when comparing prices I have found that I can go with CyberpowerPC.com and have a custom build that will ultimately be cheaper than building my own... WTF haha

I found the complete opposite of that to be true haha. If you want it all done immediately probably the better buy...if you are willing to wait for parts, you can put my pc for like 800.

i7 2600k is not necessary. The i7 series runs hyperthreading which isn't utilized in games.

i5 2500k is the same processor, no hyperthreading. 100 bucks cheaper. so for casual use and video games i5 way to go.

That might be helpful.

Not sure how many LGA1155 boards are going to have PCI 3.0, may need to go for a LGA2011 board.

It isn't PCIe, it's plain PCI.

Re: Help! Intel vs AMD

Thanx for the help.

I compared prices between going with Newegg or buying a PC from Cyberpowerpc. After rebates and shipping, plus a 5% off coupon code. Going with Cyberpower will be actually cheaper for what I want to get. Final price after rebates and everything looks to be 1912.55 vs a little over 2G's on building it myself.

Stats as followed. Please share your opinions as I will probably buy it today.

CPU- Intel i7 3820 Quad 3.6
Motherboard-Gigabyte x79-UD3 with PCI 3.0
GPU- EVGA Superclocked 680 2GB PCI 3.0
HD- 2TB 7200RPM Sata HD
DISK D- LG 12x Blu-ray Writer
RAM- Corsair 4x4GB Vengance RAM
Power Supply- Thermaltake TP-1000m
CPU Cooler- Corsair Hydro H60 liquid (dual fans)
Case- NZXTM59
And a new MK ;)
