It doesn't have to be dead though. There's still a lot of players. MS should open source the game so it could find new life when ported to Linux and Mac (id software does this). It would make them look better and could possibly convince people to buy consoles and the later games since they apparently don't care about PC gaming anymore.
If they don't want to run their server anymore they should change the game to allow users to enter a server or make it P2P. The whole single central server model is a bad idea anyway.
PC gaming is very popular.
One big problem is hackers...they destroy the game making it stupid and not worth playing. That is a huge reason why people stop playing that game.
