I'm thinking about FINALLY downloading LoL, but I just need to know first before I get into it. How similar is the gameplay to Dota 2? I don't want to start a flame war, I just want to know any similarities so I know what to expect.

Some champions are based on the Dota heroes and some of the maps look similar. In my opinion, League is more simple and more competitive then Dota, Dota is complicated and complex. But in LoL, you have to try to buy the champions with xp, so you basically have to unlock them rather then just having them already free to use. But there are about 10 champions free every week that you could test out.

Go to YouTube and find casualprogamer's channel and u can't find some good commentary on lol he also does DoTA and smite commentaries as well. He does a pretty good job

Here are the core differences
LoL doesn't have death penalty (you don't lose gold when you die), it doesn't have denials, creep blocking stuff, heroes have a lot of mana at the start and can spam , items are cheaper , hero levels are only 18, duration are short and cooldowns are also less, you get free tp but it can only be used to go to your base.
That's all I can think of for now XD
Even if it is the same genre game, the playstyle of LoL is different than that of DotA.
