What's even cooler is if you use a USB 3.0, where boot time can be shorter than a SSD...
Though keep in mind you need a USB 3.0 adapter and a hdd/usb 32 gb or larger.

then you might as well forget everything i've said and use the traditional hdd instead. :lol:

Yes you can run an Operating System on a USB Drive. My friend runs Ubuntu through his 16 gig USB every time he has his laptop with him. Running the operating sytem works the same way as you would on a HDD.
